The Fabulous World of Injectables & Facelifts
March, 2015 - Issue #125
"Oh! You got your lips done!"
This seemingly-innocent comment was recently dropped within my earshot and directed to an attractive middle-aged woman with lips Angelina Jolie would call plump. Sure, she looked pretty - but that's not the first thing anyone noticed. Instead, the focus was on just how much her appearance had been altered. That's not the kind of result most of us crave when we consider injectables and plastic surgery. Dr. Justin Heller, a board-certified plastic surgeon, just opened his third office in Valencia, explains a few of his thoughts and techniques on how to look "bright-eyed and refreshed."

"Today's aesthetic products can do more than you think - and in my office, the goal is to ensure that you leave looking like yourself - ONLY YOUNGER!"

Create Brow Lifts, Wrinkle Reduction, and Facial Shape Changes
When used by an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon, products like Botox or Xeomin can not only treat active lines by paralyzing tiny muscles, but they can also lift the brow and even change the shape of the face by relaxing muscles along the jaw. A down-slanting frown can be turned upward and a square face can be made more round. "If you're committed to a permanent, more dramatic eye rejuvenation a simple procedure usually involving the removal of extra skin and fat of the eyelids is commonly performed. The treatment is done in our Valencia office in under an hour and recovery time is short," says the doctor.

Get a Liquid Facelift with Fillers
Products like Radiesse and Belotero can fill static lines like those around your mouth, but they can also work to bring a more youthful shape to your face. "I use these fillers to do what we call a liquid face lift; injected with an eye for aesthetics, they can be used to beautifully augment depressions and enhance cheekbones," says Dr. Heller.

Use Enriched Fat Grafts for Permanent Improvements
"It's now possible to to use your own fat - it only requires a little - to not only make your face appear rejuvenated and more voluminous, but to actually improve the quality and contour of the skin," says Dr. Heller, who has conducted research and published several papers in the field. "You can use your own fat to permanently improve areas like your temples, nasolabial lines around your mouth, upper lips, jowls and cheekbones," he explains.

QUESTION
I'm in my mid 50s and I eat, exercise and dress well. I have previously done Botox and fillers but as time went on I still noticed sagging. My problem is that I don't think my face matches the rest of me. I have jowls, a noticeable lack of volume in my cheeks, excess skin of my neck, and I just look "droopy." I don't want to appear 25, but I do want to look more like how I feel, which is vibrant and youthful!

Based on your age and description of where you're at and what you want, it's time to consider a facelift. Usually the face and neck are done at the same time, removing banding and fat while also addressing the jaw line. In my practice, I work beneath the skin at the fascial level. This surgical approach is less invasive and provides an elevation of the tissues that descend with age while allowing the skin to be tension free, thus not pulled. You can also add fat grafts to give a youthful plumpness back to your cheeks, temples, and around the mouth. The result is that you still look like you - just 10 to 15 years younger and a whole lot happier.
