Many women crave a fuller, perkier bust - but feel limited by their choices. "There's a presumption that all breast augmentation is the same - that it's a big, round implant... or nothing. That's simply not the case," says Dr. Justin Heller, Santa Clarita's 2019 winner for "Best Plastic Surgeon."
In fact, when you work with a specialist, options abound! Here are three.
Auto-augmentation for a Natural Solution
If you've had implants and want them removed, or are considering augmentation but may not want implants - auto-augmentation may be the perfect fit for you. "I created the procedure nearly a decade ago. There was a demand from women, especially older women, who wanted their implants out but still craved a perkier, larger breast than they had pre-implant," says Dr. Justin Heller, board-certified plastic surgeon.
Auto-augmentation is a method of utilizing excess tissue found under the armpit to increase the breast's fullness and projection - no implant necessary. "Whether we're starting with an implant removal or are augmenting the breast for the first time, I'm often able to create a couple cup size improvement. I combine it with a breast lift; patients often compare the results by saying that they have the 'breasts of their early 20s' back," explains Dr. Heller.
The procedure comes with an additional advantage: a more sculpted you! As women age, "bra bulge" tends to build up under the arms, making for a less-flattering silhouette. "Reducing fat storages in the area to slim and shape while simultaneously improving breast lift and projection creates a much more youthful look overall. The more flat and smooth we make the sides, the better the breasts look, the more feminine the overall shape is," says Dr. Heller. "It's like resetting the clock!"
Dr. Heller has performed hundreds of these procedures on women from all over the country. "This is definitely a procedure women travel for," says the Yale-educated specialist.
"They never have to change out an implant in the future. That's a very attractive option for many women."
Fat Transfers & Implants for Increased Fullness
When auto-augmentation isn't an option, but the patient still wants a more-natural solution for breast augmentation, a fat transfer is an excellent option. "Fat transfers allow the patient to get a sort of two for one - additional fullness to the breast while also eliminating undesirable fat pockets. "We can transfer fat from the middle of thighs, the knees, hips, back, stomachs - all with micro- liposuction techniques that allow for exacting precision and a smooth result," explains Dr. Heller.
For women who may not have sufficient donor tissue or who are struggling with deflation, implants may still be the best choice. "There are implants of all sizes and shapes, saline and silicone, high projection or implants that give a soft, natural look and feel," says Dr. Heller. "During your consultation, we'll determine the perfect match for your shape and goals." Implants can be combined with a lift to improve nipple orientation, as well.
