August 2005 Business Brief
SCV Businesses Celebrate One-Year Anniversaries
August, 2005 - Issue #10
Simply Knitting
Long time Santa Clarita residents Karen Henry and Karen Elmo, known as "The Two Karens," had no doubt there was a niche in the community for their shop, Simply Knitting, which opened nearly a year ago in August.
The lost needle art of knitting has exploded among all age groups over the last five years due to the dramatic change in fibers and techniques. The film industry has also played a part - Julia Roberts, Michelle Pfieffer, Catherine Zeta-Jones and others have turned to knitting during long hours on the set. It's even rumored that Russell Crowe knits!
Henry and Elmo decided to open Simply Knitting when they realized the need for a full-service, upscale knitting and crochet store in the SCV. Instruction is offered to all skill levels and to children as well. Beginners are especially encouraged and are guided from project to project as they increase their skill level and confidence.
To celebrate their first year in business, Simply Knitting will have a spectacular one-year anniversary sale for two weeks beginning Saturday, August 13.
KaBloom
Evan and Lisa Ramer, 14-year residents of Santa Clarita and owners of KaBloom of Valencia, will celebrate their one year in business on August 20. This full-service florist provides a European shopping experience featuring large walk-in coolers, fresh-cut stems, daily specials, and more.
Part of the nation's most successful floral franchise (founded in part by Thomas Stemberg, who also founded Staples Office Supplies), KaBloom of Valencia was the first of its kind in Southern California. The Ramers, both with backgrounds in education and the arts, were drawn to KaBloom because of the industry's creative opportunities as well as the enticement of being on the ground-floor of a growth-oriented company.
Together with Ethan Courtney, KaBloom's head designer, the Ramers have actively engaged the community through the Santa Clarita Chamber of Commerce and VIA. They have also worked closely with local churches and synagogues.
In 2004, a KaBloom floral arrangement was featured on the cover of InsideSCV Magazine.
Stone City
Joe and Shatha Matni opened their tile and granite store, Stone City, located on Bouquet Canyon, in August of 2004. Joe has extended experience and knowledge in the field - his family has worked in the stone business for years. The best part of being in business in Santa Clarita, says the Matnis, is working and meeting the people of their community. With the growth, new homes and remodels this town has seen in the recent past, Stone City couldn't have found a better time or town in which to do business. The Matnis look forward to assisting current and future clients with all of their residential or commercial needs.
