Common Mistakes with Estate Planning
Estate planning allows you to proactively allow others to take care of you and your heirs. But there are several common mistakes that people make with estate planning.
Not Having an Estate Plan: Most people don't have an estate plan at all. Maybe they thought they could make one later or that they didn't need one. When someone dies without an estate plan, then it is up to the courts to decide where your estate goes, not your family.
Not Naming Backups: Every person in your estate plan should have a backup. What if the person you name to be in charge of your affairs or your heir dies before you? Your estate plan should have backups for each individual so you, not the courts, are deciding what to do.
Not Updating your Estate Plan: An estate plan might be perfect when created but life changes. To make sure your estate plan is running smoothly, you should review your plan with an attorney every three to five years to make sure there are no laws or life events that could impact your estate plan.
Forgetting to Update Beneficiary Designations: In addition to reviewing and updating your will, trust, and powers of attorney, beneficiary designations on bank and retirement accounts should be reviewed and updated to make sure they do not conflict with your estate plan.

Remembering Cindi Rowley of Refined Vintage Boutique

Joy - that's what I felt every time I was with Cindi Rowley, owner of Refined Vintage Boutique and - much more importantly, a treasured mom, wife, grandma and friend.
Cindi made me a DIYer. In this photo, she is teaching me to gold-leaf furniture via Facetime! Over the years, we plastered my walls together, glazed in tandem, refinished my piano, customized everything I bought that was interesting but not "just right" and many more wild things I couldn't complete without her. Her gifts and handprints are all over my beautiful home.
We discussed aging together, beauty and family. Hers was her favorite topic. She made everyone feel special, including the hundreds of Refined's shoppers who became lifelong friends. She empowered thousands of SCV DIY home projects and loved being able to help her friends and neighbors create our own beauty. In her honor, we will continue to make things beautiful for the people we love the most.

Cindi began her career as a painting contractor. With 30 years of experience she added her special touch to the places she worked for by bringing her intricate design expertise and deep creative touch. She discovered Annie Sloan chalk paint and made the decision to open what would become the beginnings of Refined Vintage Boutique.
The lines she carried grew and so did her passion for serving the community. Through her small shop, she built relationships with customers and helped bring beauty to those who stepped into her store with the items she delicately picked on her own each season. If you had a small furniture piece to redo, Cindi would talk to you. If you had an entire kitchen to remodel, she would walk you through the process. She looked at your pictures, considered design and offered her expertise, genuinely caring for the outcome.
The light, the beauty and the magic that Cindi brought to Refined extends to every corner of the store this holiday season. The smells of the holiday candles, the twinkling lights hung from the ceilings, and of course, the overwhelming feeling of love from Cindi is all around. It is in her honor and memory that we highlight not just Refined, but a small business, woman-owned and operated, and a local community member, who made our world a little brighter by being in it.
