•  The Great Desert Railroad Race - In 1904 the Death Valley country began bustling with mining excitement! Gold was discovered in an area called the Bullfrog Mining District! Prospectors, promoters and mining men were swarming to the region and the railroads weren't far behind. A senator from Montana, William Andrews Clark, whose copper mines in Butte were making him a fortune, had his eyes on the Death Valley region. From California there was Francis Marion Smith whose new borax mine was set to open not far from the boom towns! Clark and Smith thought they could work together. At first it looked like they had a deal but then........double-crossing and dirty dealings led to a race for riches! On Saturday, June 25, documentary film producer Ted Faye will be telling the story of The Great Desert Railroad Race for the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society. Included in the presentation will be a screening of his movie "The Great Desert Railroad Race". The talk will take place at 2pm on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at the Saugus Train Station in Heritage Junction at William S. Hart Park, a unit of the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation System, 24101 Newhall Avenue (formerly San Fernando Road), in Newhall, California.
