A Message from Supervisor Kathryn Barger
Chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Fifth District
July, 2020 - Issue #190

In a time when the world can be divided, the Santa Clarita Valley community has shown that our residents are still deeply connected. I have been encouraged to see local nonprofits and volunteers use this time to be compassionate and generous. Being physically distanced has not meant being socially disengaged. Countless groups have thought of creative ideas to serve, uplift and protect one another. This difficult season makes the resources provided by our local nonprofits even more pressing and praiseworthy.

Santa Clarita Grocery distributed fresh food to residents in need during the pandemic. Each year, this incredible organization serves more than 13,000 families. During a time of uncertainty, having a fully stocked refrigerator is one less concern thanks to this fantastic initiative.

The Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center continues to be a cornerstone in this community. All year, they are dedicated to enriching seniors' lives and encouraging their dignity and independence. In recent months, they've ensured seniors are well fed by offering meals for pickup and delivery. Their care managers remain readily available to offer services over the phone.

Bridge to Home, the SCV's largest service provider for those experiencing homelessness, remains on the frontlines of this crisis. Their work has not slowed during this public health emergency as they connect those most in need with supportive services and a place to stay at their year-round shelter.

Other local nonprofits have utilized their abilities and resources to be a force for good, and community members have lent their support and made generous donations along the way. Residents raised funds for protective equipment for health care workers. Healthy residents donated blood to save lives during an anticipated shortage. Social workers and teachers checked on youth so they continually thrive. Customers supported local businesses by ordering delivery and curbside pickup.

To these three nonprofits, and so many more incredible organizations in the Santa Clarita Valley, thank you for your continued support of this community. You make our neighborhoods better and make our future brighter.
