Keeping Up with Ken
Q & A with Santa Clarita City Manager Ken Striplin
March, 2022 - Issue #208

Q: At the beginning of every year, people take on new hobbies that encourage a healthier lifestyle. Where can residents get help sticking to their New Year's Resolutions?
Many people mark the new year as a time for a fresh start and new positive habits. Staying on track and making sure we stick to our New Year's Resolutions isn't always easy. Luckily for Santa Clarita residents, the city offers various opportunities to get out and be active. What better way to feel healthy than by enjoying our beautiful open space and city amenities?
Our Youth and Adult Sports Leagues are now open for registration, and I encourage residents to get out on the field, hit the court or get active at many of our other city facilities.
I personally enjoy spending quality time with my kids, hiking some of our scenic trails. We have over 100 miles of trails and 35 parks for residents seeking outdoor activities.
Whether you are kicking around a soccer ball at one of our parks or playing pickleball with friends, we have activities for all interests. The best place to discover upcoming recreation opportunities is in the city's Seasons magazine, which you can read online at santa-clarita.com/seasons.

Q: Speaking of nature, it is the theme of this year's One Story One City Program. What can people look forward to?
I know that book lovers look forward to this Program all year - and for 2022, the selected book is all about nature. This year's One Story One City book is, The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier & More Creative by Florence Williams.
The book uncovers the power of nature's healing properties and will inspire readers to indulge in the open space surrounding our community. The program encourages community members to engage in a city-wide book celebration throughout the month of March. We invite residents to read the book and then come together for various events, crafts, outdoor activities and discussions. One Story One City programming will include a virtual conversation with the author herself and a Full Moon Hike event. Get involved by checking out a copy of the book from your local library branch to participate in this exciting city program. To learn more about One Story One City, visit santaclaritalibrary.com.

Q: Old Town Newhall is really bustling with new businesses and entertainment opportunities. When will the popular SENSES Block Parties return?
SENSES Block Parties are always a great way to spend a night with friends. Residents can engage all their SENSES through live entertainments, themed activities, food trucks and adult beverages on Main Street every third Thursday of the month from March to October. Each month residents can look forward to enjoying new, fun and exciting themes. On March 17, celebrate the "Shamrockin' SENSES" in style beginning at 7pm.
The family-friendly event welcomes community members to connect with friends and neighbors while enjoying the city's premier arts and entertainment district. Residents can dance the night away with the featured upbeat guest band, Craic in the Stone, while enjoying a drink from the on-street bar, followed by a bite from one of many tasty food trucks or local restaurants. For more information about SENSES and upcoming events within the City of Santa Clarita, visit santa-clarita.com/events.
