Keeping Up with Ken
Q & A with Santa Clarita City Manager Ken Striplin
November, 2024 - Issue #235

Veterans Day is approaching. How does Santa Clarita commemorate and honor those who have bravely defended our country?
In Santa Clarita, our patriotism runs deep, and Veterans Day is one of the most important occasions for us to come together as a community to honor the brave men and women who have served our country. On November 11, at 11am, we will gather once again at the Veterans Historical Plaza for our annual Veterans Day Ceremony - a longstanding tradition that reflects our profound respect for those who have served to protect our freedoms. This year's ceremony, in partnership with our local veterans' organizations, will include moving musical performances, guest speakers and the ceremonial changing of the flags by the Knights of Columbus and Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 355. These acts of remembrance remind us that the freedoms we enjoy each day are not to be taken for granted - they are secured by the selflessness of those who served. We invite the community to come together as we honor our Veterans on this special day. For more details, visit santaclaritaveterans.com.

I hear a train is leaving the North Pole. What new festive event is coming to Santa Clarita this holiday season?
Metrolink has selected Santa Clarita's Vista Canyon Multi-Modal Station as one of this year's Holiday Express Train stops. On Sunday, December 15, residents can enjoy a festive train ride like never before, with each train car decked out in holiday decorations and cheerful carolers singing classic holiday tunes. Two trains will depart, one at 9:30am, and another at 1:20pm, offering fun activities and entertainment for the whole family. The festivities start even before you board, with check-in and pre-event celebrations kicking off at 8am for the 9:30am train, and 12pm for the 1:20pm departure. Enjoy live music, kids' craft stations and a chance to give back through a pre-event charity drive. Don't miss this one-of-a-kind holiday experience. Light Up Main Street is one of the city's most popular events. What makes this event so unforgettable and what can residents expect this year?
I think this event is so popular because it officially kicks-off the holiday season here in Santa Clarita. Light Up Main Street is the ideal way to usher in the most festive time of the year with family, friends and neighbors. Each year, thousands gather on Main Street in Old Town Newhall to take in the magical moment when the Santa Clarita City Council flips the switch, instantly illuminating the magnificent Christmas tree and all down Main Street with tens of thousands of holiday lights. Mark your calendar for Saturday, November 16, from 4pm to 8pm, and be ready to take in live music on two stages, savor treats from food trucks, write letters to Santa and take part in a Whoville Celebration. Browse for unique gifts at the Maker's Marketplace, experience the snow zone and capture a photo with Santa himself! From the polar playground to the candy cane carnival, there's something for everyone to enjoy. For more information on Light Up Main Street please visit oldtownnewhall.com.
