Q: August marks a normal back-to-school season for most students in Santa Clarita. This means, once again, we will see busy streets, sidewalks and crosswalks during drop-off and pick-up times. What advice do you have for parents and students?
After last year's distance learning, many may have forgotten just how congested school areas can get at the beginning and end of the school day. I want to remind everyone to be a Heads Up driver and pedestrian. This means disconnecting from distractions, especially the cell phone. Many students can be seen walking, listening to music or texting with friends. Remind them always to pay attention when they come to a crosswalk and put the phone away. Before students cross the street, they should see and be seen, taking the time to make eye contact with the waiting drivers and always crossing in a crosswalk. By following these simple steps, we can help ensure a safe school year for our children.

Q: Next month marks the return of one of the most popular local volunteer events. For people who are not familiar with the River Rally, what is it and how can residents get involved?
The annual River Rally is a long-time favorite event here in Santa Clarita. Since the first event in 1995, volunteers have collected more than 450,000 pounds of waste from the Santa Clara Riverbed. For those who would like to participate this year, the event will take place on Saturday, September 18 from 8am to 11am, behind the shopping center at 18386 Soledad Canyon Road. Q: Santa Clarita is about to welcome a new Community Center! What can you tell us about this project?
As a city manager, the new Canyon Country Community Center is a project that I really take pride in - and I can't wait to welcome the community to this new hub of enrichment and activity. The Community Center sits on a nine-acre site at the corner of Soledad Canyon Road and Sierra Highway. It has completely transformed this part of the city. Where old buildings and massive billboards once stood, there are now walking paths, public art, a gateway plaza and, of course, the 25,000-square-foot Community Center facility. This beautiful city amenity will be the new home for classes, recreation, events and opportunities to connect with neighbors and friends. Some of the highlights are the outdoor event space, the grand room that can seat 350 people for an event and the demonstration kitchen where people can perfect their culinary skills.
