Double the Applause
June, 2023 - Issue #221

The Canyon Theatre Guild and the Santa Clarita Ballet are doubling up on opportunities to impress with twice the performances - and double the fun.

Don't Miss Canyon Theatre Guild's Two Hilarious Shows

Ken Ludwig's "A Comedy of Tenors"
One hotel suite, four tenors, two wives, three girlfriends and a soccer stadium filled with screaming fans. What could possibly go wrong? It's 1930s Paris and the stage is set for the concert of the century - as long as producer Henry Saunders can keep the amorous Italian superstar Tito Merelli and his hot-blooded wife Maria from causing runaway chaos. Filled with characters from Ken Ludwig's famous "Lend Me A Tenor," this new addition to the Ludwig canon is an uproarious ride full of mistaken identities, blissful romance and madcap delight.

"Guacamole Queens"
In this deliciously-funny Southern-fried comedy, the Verdeen cousins of Sweetgum, Texas - Gaynelle, Peaches and Jimmie Wyvette - are up against the clock as they frantically attempt to produce the ultimate high school reunion before the old building is demolished.
Shows run May 26 to June 25 with ticket prices starting at only $15.

Santa Clarita Ballet Returns to the Stage with Two Grimm Fairy Tales
"Hansel & Gretel"
The well-known tale of two lost, hungry children who come upon a candy cottage in the woods is set to the opera by Englebert Humperdinck. The tale features the talented Santa Clarita Ballet Company dancers, as well as Santa Clarita Ballet alum Jeremiah Bernal who originated the role of Hansel and recently graduated from the Professional Program at Nutmeg Conservatory in Connecticut.
The role of Gretel will be danced by SCB Company member Kira Gilliam. Kira danced the Sugar Plum Fairy in SCBC's "Nutcracker" last year, as well as the Dying Swan in Santa Clarita Valley Youth Orchestra's "Carnival of the Animals."
Briana McCoy will dance the role of the Sandman who gathers all the forest creatures to watch over Hansel and Gretel as they spend a terrifying night in the woods. Cari Mayfield will dance the role of the Witch and Annie Han will dance the role of the Dew Fairy.

"The 12 Dancing Princesses"
Also on the program is a Santa Clarita Ballet premiere, "The 12 Dancing Princesses." Sometimes called "The Worn-Out Dancing Shoes," this tale poses a mystery: How is it that 12 princesses who are locked in their bed chamber every night have worn-out shoes every morning? Whimsical forest animals, flowers and sea creatures add immensely to the beautiful scenes set to themes by Vivaldi and other recognizable classical pieces. The "12 Dancing Princesses" will feature both SCB's Academy students and Company dancers.
Purchase your tickets now for the 2:30pm or 7:30pm showings on Saturday, June 10 at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons.
