Local Writer Publishes First Novel
Jocelyne Badr was a Valencia Library Regular - Now her Work can be Found in the Stacks
January, 2006 - Issue #15
A local resident and familiar face at Valencia Library, Jocelyne Badr is ecstatic about the publication of her first book, "Alter Idem." The tome has just been picked up by Levant distributors in Lebanon and is being showcased by one of the area's major bookstores.

Classified as historical fiction, the book is loosely based upon Badr's literature-inspiring background. Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Badr was educated in a French Catholic nuns' school before immigrating to the United States in 1987. Unlike a lot of historical fiction, the interplay of characters is very revealing, exploring the renaissance and the complexities of a young woman's coming of age.

As the storyline progresses, it reads much like a mystery, yet can be interpreted differently depending upon the reader's beliefs and up-bringing. The fact that the book leaves itself open to interpretation makes it quite unique. Easy to read and fast-paced, some have compared it to a movie script.

Set in 19th Century Italy, "Alter Idem" paints the consciousness and heart of Francesca Gabrieli, a flourishing Catholic aristocrat who, while seeking deliverance from her father's addictive dominion, her mother's overpowering affection and her own inhibitions, becomes the protege of Alexx, her Latin teacher. Like any good novel, secrets are revealed and lives are transformed.

Why write such a book? Badr explained that in her constant pursuit of wanting to reach a higher level of achievement and emotional growth, she often revisits her journals. In doing so, "Alter Idem" was conceived when she recognized an emerging theme that she needed to explore. In some way, the book serves as the ultimate confession while celebrating the people who played a major role in her life. The work also draws upon her fond memories of Italy, having taken a guided tour in 1995.

"'Alter Idem' invites us to experience the metaphorical and literal maze in which the heroine, Francesca, is entrapped. She must find her way out in order to become a person in her own right, true to her own passionate beliefs," says Mary Stewart, trusted opinion molder and librarian.
