Cameron Smyth
Cameron Smyth
Yes, that's Mayor Cameron Smyth so adeptly balancing on a fitness ball. When he's not touting the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, Smyth's playing papa with son Gavin, who's soon to have more kid company. Yup, Cameron and his wife Lena are expecting their second child next year.

Looks like 2006 is going to be a big one for Smyth. He announced on September 10 that he'll be running for state assembly (38th district), with the primary set for June of '06. Issues that prompted our debonair mayor to toss in the proverbial hat include: businesses fleeing for other states due to the high cost of doing business in California; lack of resources for local infrastructure (Smyth will be demanding more lanes on the busy local freeways); public education; balancing the budget; and securing our boarders to prevent human trafficking.

SCVians aren't the only ones that should expect to hear more from Smyth in the future. The 38th district encompasses the SCV, North San Fernando Valley and roughly 60 percent of Simi Valley.

Spectrum Health Club in Valencia hosted their Summer of Success Fitness Challenge to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation on August 28 and 29. Activities included a two-hour "spin off" class (Surprise - none of Inside SCV's staff placed in the "spin off." Bigger surprise - none of our staff entered the contest, either. Stop judging - we aren't lazy, we're journalists. It's our job to observe.), two hours of power aerobic challenge, a swim relay and a basketball tournament. The event raised approximately $7,000 for the organization.

The Boys & Girls Club quickly followed their auction success with the Second Annual Keyes Lexus of Valencia Club Classic. Golfers (whose fees benefited the over 3,000 local youth that utilize the B & G after-school services) included pretty-in-pink girl-power team Anna Ott, Diane Ayres, Tammy Becker and Vickie Huber.

Bill McClendon of Keyes Lexus of Valencia (Sidebar with us for a moment: What hasn't Lexus sponsored this year? Ok, that was a hypothetical question, so don't really answer it... But really - Lexus has noticeably increased its already strong community involvement. It must be that awesome hybrid SUV that has them tingling with do-goodness... Ok, back to the photograph description!) took a moment to smile for the camera with Al Gowing, the tournament co-chair.
