My hat is off to the farmers. Their job is difficult, what with the weeds, the bugs and the weather conspiring against them. And that promise God made to Adam in Genesis ("And so, the ground will be under a curse ... [it] will produce thorns and thistles") adds to the challenge.
A starry night will reflect a generosity of both spirit and finances when donors, staff, clients and other guests unite to celebrate the many accomplishments of Carousel Ranch. A thousand supporters are expected to attend Heart of the West, the biggest annual fundraiser for Carousel Ranch, a therapeutic horseback riding organization for children with disabilities. One of the few times "upscale" and "Western" occur in the same breath, it's a relaxed evening where some attendees will wear cowboy duds but enjoy top-of-the-line atmosphere and gourmet fixin's.
Check out the pictures from the singles event at El Torito on May 4th. Another fun-filled evening!
Check out the pictures from the singles event at The Greens on June 8th. It was a great success!
On Saturday August 13, "Escape to Paradise" by joining the Soroptimists of Santa Clarita in their 31st Annual Charity Auction. Now, no one's knocking your love of the mundane. But just like daily oatmeal breakfasts, even great, if monotonous, vacations can get a little wearing on the soul. This year, expand your horizons and plan something completely different. The old adage, "You only live once," entirely applies to travel, so call your travel agent, pack your bags and start living!

What can be more relaxing than strolling through a European garden, swirling a deep red glass of merlot, enjoying a cool, fruity Sauvignon Blanc or tasting a rich buttery chardonnay? How about adding the tempting foods of the region to compliment each glass of wine. Add all of that to the knowledge that with each sip of the flavorful grape you are helping to support our valley's seniors. You'll get that feeling and more when you "Uncork Your Senses" this summer on August 19 at the Saugus Speedway.
Over 100 supporters of the Boys & Girls Club stopped by Don and Cheri Fleming's not-so-humble abode in May to check out the nonprofit's big-ticket live auction items for their annual event in June. The usual combination of yummy eats (thanks to LA Trends Catering) and free drinks had the high-credit-scored folks among us pre-signing checks for items like laser eye surgery, a horse and (say it with us, "Price is Right"-style...) a new car!
Put on your flip-flops but don't step on that pop-top. The Santa Clarita Valley's most anticipated night is closing in and everyone who is anyone will be a Parrothead for this year's 35th Annual Benefit Auction for the Boys & Girls Club of the SCV. On June 10 at the Mann Biomedical Park, the Jimmy Buffett-style "It's Five-O'clock Somewhere" theme will have Co-Chairs Don and Cheri Fleming and you breaking out that Hawaiian shirt and bidding on a 60-page catalogue of items that is straight out of paradise.
It's time for Michael Berger and Diana Cusumano to switch their license plate holders. The two have been bestowed with the coveted title of Man & Woman of the Year, complete with fancy-schmancy license plate holders declaring their new positions to all traffic passerby.
Teri and Chuck Maier's relocation from Louisiana to the Santa Clarita Valley in 2004 proved to be far more challenging than they ever could have imagined. One month after moving to Valencia, MacKenzie, the middle of their three daughters, was stricken with severe left hip and leg pain and had difficulty walking.
The City of Santa Clarita hosted its annual Arbor Day festivities at Central Park on May 6. The event is meant to educate residents about the benefits of trees as part of the world-recognized Arbor Day holiday. Mayor Laurene Weste accepted the Tree City USA award on behalf of the city, a prestigious honor bestowed by the National Arbor Day Foundation given to cities that consistently have a viable tree management plan and program.
Revolution. Colossus. X. Viper. Scream. And now, Tatsu. Sometimes it only takes one word to describe a thrill of a lifetime and for Santa Clarita residents that thrill has come from Six Flags Magic Mountain. For the past 35 years, the theme park is much more than a place to take weekend visitors. Six Flags Magic Mountain employs our youth and has given the Santa Clarita Valley its mark on the map.
Some of you asked nicely. Others offered bribes, and a few of you even threatened bodily harm - all in the name of a good time. So here it is - the holy grail of fun in the SCV. Use it to amaze out-of-towners, ease first-date jitters, cure couple boredom or calm the storm otherwise known as your twins. You know the rules: Prices quoted here are, unless otherwise noted, for one adult, and can change at the whim of the powers that be (also known as "not us").

If you are fortunate enough to receive an invitation to dinner at David and Susan Cheney's home, don't dare turn it down. Upon walking into their warm Bridgeport home, the Cheneys will more than likely pop the cork off one of the many bottles of wine they have collected over the years. The built-in wine cabinet tucked inside the office holds over 250 bottles of chardonnays and cabernets they have collected on their several trips to the wine country.
There's nothing like a good fashion show to inspire local divas to dust off their push-up bras, schedule hair extensions, snatch the credit card and gossip with friends - all in the name of charity. In March, the Soroptimists drew 260 dolled-up SCVians to "Fusion," a new twist in the nonprofit's annual show.
Forty representatives traveled to our state capitol. It was a formidable cross section of our Valley, a who's-who of Santa Clarita. Representatives from College of the Canyons, the Hart School Board, the Saugus Elementary School superintendent, our city manager, Newhall Land, the Boys & Girls Club, the Child & Family Center, Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce, Valley Industrial Association, Providence Holy Cross Hospital, and many local business owners participated.
Whether you're looking for unique ways to spend time with family and friends or the perfect chance to do a little something nice for those less fortunate, Santa Clarita organizations are ready to entertain you and move you to action.
