Sure, the SCV gets a snow day now and again, but it's rarely more than a few pretty little flakes.
For the ultimate in snowball fights, you have to drive. Here are our fave spots for a day of snow play!
Big Bear Lake
About 120 Miles from the SCV
Snow abounds in Big Bear, an adorable community filled with gingerbread-roofed houses, plenty of space to meander, fun restaurants and more. But the real Snow Day fun is snow tubing at the Alpine Slide. This busy spot makes their own snow, so there's plenty of padding on the way down the groomed slopes. Grab a giant tube and spend a few hours taking the rides of your life, including on the automated "escalator" that takes clients to the top of the slope.
Wrightwood
About 70 Miles from the SCV
You could pay to play in the snow at the Mountain High resort by strapping skis to your feet, but most Snow Day enthusiasts join other cold-weather fun seekers on the side of the road after a good snow storm. Be prepared for impromptu fun; to hear, "That looks like a good spot!" from the backseat; and to meet new friends as you collaborate together to create a path that takes sledders away from that big tree.
Frazier Park
About 40 Miles from the SCV
Some head to the Chula Vista Campground in Frazier Park, but your best bet is to do a little research before you head up to see what seems right for you and your crew. Kids play in the snow wherever there is some on this SCV-adjacent day trip - there aren't really organized snow play areas, and that's part of the fun. Don't expect massive quantities, but there's usually enough after a storm for a quality snowball battle, some sledding and petite snowperson.
Note: Some areas require an Adventure Pass - often sold at local gas stations. Get one, or get a ticket!
Snow Essentials
Sure, you need mittens and waterproof shoes, but these are the real additions that make snow day the most fun day of the season!
Snowman Accessories An old hat and scarf, charcoal bricks for the eyes/buttons and the ever-vital carrot for the nose will make for the quintessential Frosty.
Thermoses of Toasty Drinks Hot chocolate, hot coffee, hot tea... you're going to want to warm up with more than a lukewarm Starbucks you got on the way up.
Snow Play Yes, you may only head to the white stuff once a year, but a sporting-good store sled is only going to set you back $35. Splurge.
Shovel Websites and weather forecasts say you don't need chains for your car? Yay! Bring at least a small shovel anyway. As the day grows warmer and more cars drive in concentrated areas, snow can become slushy, or the opposite can happen and you can find yourself in more of the white stuff than planned. It's easy to get stuck where you park if you just pull off to the side of the road, so be prepared.
