The Spicy Edition
The coolest special around is
The Social's spicy Jambalaya. The authentic mix of sausage, chicken, shrimp and fish - served in a spicy tomato sauce over penne pasta - is only available for a limited time. (Also for a limited time: the 20-percent-off coupon on page 33 of this magazine!); 799-9155
Speed over to
Oggi's Pizza & Brewing Co. for their Baja 500 Sandwich. Handmade with blackened chicken, provolone cheese, roasted jalapeno, lettuce, tomato and Cajun Aioli Sauce, this baby's h-o-t. Cool off with the seasonal Schwartz Belgian IPA beer. It is a beautiful golden pale color, with a pleasant bouquet of aromatic hops that blend perfectly with Oggi's Belgian yeast strain. The hops and malt in this beer resembles an American-style IPA, while the yeast contributes to its fruity character. Enjoy both on the outdoor patio; 252-7883
Why does love hurt? Ask
Wolf Creek Restaurant & Brewing Co. regulars, who have lovingly renamed the Gaucho Steak the "Oucho" steak, a nod to the 12-ounce rib eye's spice factor. This delicious piece of meat is stuffed with roasted garlic, jalapenos and a spicy cilantro-pesto, and is served with grilled vegetables and roasted garlic mashed potatoes; 263-9653
Sabor Cocina Mexicana's Jicama Tortilla Tacos might not be super picante, but the demand for this light and refreshing dish is hot. Filled with organic chicken, avocado, lettuce and mango, and wrapped in thinly-sliced jicama, these tacos have a cult following of devoted diners. Pair yours with the Coconut Mojito or the Mango Mint Margarita for an especially special guilt-free treat; 259-9002

The Cocktail Edition
What could be better than sipping an awesome cocktail while staring at a giant tank of jellyfish? Knowing that your cocktail's not as expensive as a giant tank of jellyfish. Head over to
New Moon's extended happy hour (from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.) at the bar seven days a week (and in the dining room Sunday through Wednesday) for some seriously-good deals like $6 house cocktails (vodka, gin martinis, Cosmo, Lemon Drop, Mango Martini, Apple Martini, Mai Tai), $5 well drinks (margaritas, Kamikaze, Tequila Sunrise, Screwdriver, Cape Cod, Sea Breeze, Bay Breeze, Madras), $4 draft beers and $2.50 domestic bottled beers. Bottom's up!; 257-4321
We know that martinis are timelessly sophisticated and sexy, but we just can't get over the whole "olive" thing.
Salt Creek Grille heard our cry for an equally impressive, but oh-so-drinkable, feminine version of the James Bond staple and gave us the Cherry Lemon Drop (Svedka Cherry Vodka, Triple Sec and fresh-squeezed lemon in a sugar-rimmed glass with a sugar-coated lemon wedge) and Chell's Mandarin Crush (Svedka Clementine Vodka, orange juice, a splash of grenadine in a sugar-rimmed glass with a sugar-coated orange slice). We were already forever grateful, but then a little birdie reminded us that if we ordered our favorites with Grey Goose on Thursdays, our drinks would be 50 percent off. And then that same birdie suggested that we take our drinks outside to be enjoyed on the outdoor patio (especially on Sundays, when there's always a great live-music selection). We owe that birdie a drink (preferably on a Thursday); 222-9999
When we heard that
Hacienda Don Cuco's had created the Coconut Pineapple Margarita, complete with (insert sound of salivary glands gone wild here) a shredded coconut rim, we had to have one immediately. (Seriously. We didn't even finish our senten...) Our intentions were pure: Get in, get one Coconut Pineapple Margarita, and get back to work finishing sentences. Of course, once seated on the divine covered patio, we decided to stay for lunch. The Caribbean Chicken Salad was the perfect pairing; 252-8074
"Free" is a happy word, because it usually means you're getting something extra (Though the opposite, like getting news you're lice or STD free, rocks, too - so we've heard). And being "fancy free," well that is the very best kind of free. (And by "fancy free," we're thinking "complimentary," which is a super-fancy way of saying, "You ain't gotta pay for this stuff.") Want to know the best "complimentary" fancy-free stuff coming your way? Free appetizers from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. during Happy Hour (which runs from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.) Monday through Friday at at
El Chaparral Mexican Restaurant in Canyon Country (252-5599) and
Presidente Mexican Grill in Saugus (297-7244).
Cruise into the Fourth of July
Celebrate your freedom aboard the luxurious riverboat, Scarlett Belle, on the Fourth of July from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. For $95, you'll enjoy a catered dinner, a couple of drinks, dancing and a spectacular fireworks show, all while cruising the Channel Islands Harbor. (But only if you're 21 or over.); 805-204-0977 www.scarlettbelle.com
