My grandmother passed away years ago. My father and I flew out to Illinois to surprise my mother, offer her some support and to attend the funeral. As I drove her on an errand, I asked how she was doing. She turned to me and said, "You know, you never stop being a parent and you never stop being a child."
The relationship between a mother and a child remains one of the deepest and most complicated of relationships. The bonds of love and care which are formed, negotiated and renegotiated through time and seasons tug at our hearts and our emotions. They stretch and contract like elastic and rarely break.
On Mother's Day, flowers and brunch are easy ways to celebrate Mom. But how can we move from celebrating Mom to honoring Mom? Can we find ways to let her know that even though your life has changed and even though your relationship has changed, that you are still her child and she is still your mom? Honor her and see what blessings follow.
