Legacy Adds 3D Printer to STEM Acquisitions
Legacy Christian Academy recently added a 3D printer to their long list of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) acquisitions, allowing students to actively engage with state-of-the-art technology.

3D printers require a three-dimensional virtual design of the object the user wants to create; this CAD (Computer Aided Design) is then created in physical form using the 3D printer. The printing process converts the data into thousands of miniscule "slices," then makes the artifact slice by slice from the bottom up. These minute layers stick together, forming a solid object. Layers can be complex and even move, like in the case of wheels or hinges!

"It's remarkable to have this kind of technology in a Kinder-through-eighth-grade Academy; most high schools don't even have 3D printers yet," says Dr. Matthew Northrop, principal of Legacy Christian Academy.

"We have embraced our nickname, 'Legacy Tech,'" says Superintendent Tim Borruel. "We know that investments in technology, when paired with specialized Enrichment teachers skilled in the use and pedagogical applications of it, are essential ingredients in our ongoing goal to develop students best prepared for success in the 21st century."

"Legacy's Innovation Lab is where Academy students in every grade go to deeply, critically and practically engage with tomorrow's technology; it's a space that was designed to foster creativity and creation. Our new 3D printer is part of this plan and has already become a very popular addition to our STEM resources," says Dr. Northrop.
