Second Annual MakerSpace Festival
Arrives at College of the Canyons on March 23

Makers and innovators of all ages are invited to stretch their imaginations and ingenuity at the second-annual SoCal MakerSpace Festival. Come celebrate creativity, resourcefulness and invention on Saturday, March 23 at the College of the Canyons.

The family-friendly festival will feature hands-on STEAM activities, free workshops and exhibitions of the latest cutting-edge technology, including 3-D printing, lasers and coding.
"We are very excited to bring the MakerSpace Festival back to the Santa Clarita Valley and the surrounding Southern California community," said Andy McCutcheon, dean of the college's School of Humanities, which oversees MakerSpace. "We hope this event sparks the imagination and creativity of attendees of all ages."

Several keynote speakers will also be presenting and food trucks will be parked onsite.

The MakerSpace Festival will be held from 10am to 3pm at the Valencia campus at the main entrance. Parking will be free in all lots. Admission is free and open to the public.

Created by Maker Media, the first MakerSpace Festival was held in the Bay Area in 2006. Since 2016, College of the Canyons has operated two MakerSpace locations at its Valencia and Canyon Country campuses.

Both of the COC MakerSpace facilities have been designed as collaborative learning areas which give users free access to tools, materials, technological resources, skills training and a variety of entrepreneurial opportunities.

Legacy Christian Academy's Robotics Team Named Semifinalists
Guided by mentors who are professionals in the field, Legacy's eight-student robotics team beat out schools like Hart, Notre Dame High School, Verdugo Hills High and Cesar Chavez Learning Academy to earn the title of regional semifinalists.
The hard-fought slot came after months of twice-weekly practice, numerous local and regional tournaments, hours of refining their bot - and investing in a teamwork mindset. "We work together pretty well! We help each other focus - because you have to be extremely focused to get the job done. We compromise a lot. We're all friends now," explains Legacy middle-school learner Kalissa Collins.

Part of the FIRST Tech Challenge competition, Legacy's robotics team designed, built, programmed and operated robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge. "Our students are putting the Academy's STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) curriculum into real-life practice," says Legacy's Head of School Matt Millett.

"It's incredible, the opportunities presented here. There's so much scholarship money, so many connections, so much real-world application," says Coach Jerry Johnson. The FIRST Tech Challenge program states on their website that participants are eligible to apply for over $80 million in college scholarships.
Using Java-based programming, Legacy's robotics team designs, codes and builds robots - but the engagement doesn't stop there. "There's a lot more to it," says Team Captain Veda Hingarh. "There's something for everyone on our team. Whether you're into math, drawing, programming, marketing, fundraising, management - we can use you! It's a very welcoming group."

The team is lucky to draw support from the Academy and supporters. "Our Legacy parents are a very generous group," says Johnson. "They make it possible to compete by helping us obtain the same resources that are available at the high-school level. We also have a very forward-thinking administration that's very committed to growing and updating the program."

Legacy Christian Academy is a Kindergarten-through-eighth-grade private school in Valencia. Tours of their Innovation Lab, where the robotics program resides, are available by appointment. 257-7377

SCVi gets "Lit" with Slam Poetry Presentation of Learning
Navigating adolescence can be difficult, particularly if you feel you aren't being heard. At SCVi, they want learners to know that they all have a vital voice. To that end, ninth- through 12th-grade learners participate in an annual slam poetry project called "Get Lit: Words Ignite."
The Get Lit model encourages literacy by teaching students to read and analyze classic poetry and empowers them to respond by composing original spoken word performance poems. The project culminates in a Presentation of Learning (POL), a night of learner-led slam poetry that also includes a gallery of learner created art representing their original poems.
Learners who wish to dive deeper into the world of slam poetry may participate in a semester-long slam poetry elective and audition for the SCVi Upper School Slam Team. The team works diligently to perfect their craft by writing original poems individually and in groups, memorizing them and polishing their performances. SCVi will compete in this year's Get Lit Classic Slam for the fourth time this April.
SCVi Charter School fosters each child's individuality to discover their highest potential in the environment which best suits their learning style. ileadsantaclarita.org
