"My daughter Layla is 6 years old. Just like other parents, we were a bit skeptical and not sure if Layla would approve of her new school or the two-hour drive that we had to do to get to Santa Clarita School of Performing Arts. After speaking with Uncle Mike, as we call the owner of SCSOPA, he assured us that we would be well taken care of. We felt comfortable after Mike explained all the different learning opportunities available. Priceless! The opportunities are endless here. We decided to pursue and invest in some monologue and commercial classes and gain a bit more of the skills that Santa Clarita School of Performing Arts offered. Layla now has three Macy's fashion shows under her belt and counting, gained a cover photo for Parent magazine, has done large photo shoots and became a Kid Brand Ambassador. I know we will only be adding to this list. Layla continues to enjoy her monologue classes and I have noticed a huge difference in her skills. She is improving every day. Her self esteem and confidence are through the roof! We highly recommend SCSOPA. You will not be disappointed. Thank you to Mike, his staff and school for the lifelong skills."

How I Met Your Swim Instructor
By Justine Kerrick
Who teaches your child to swim is often as important as where they take lessons. For many kids, it's their first experience with a teacher. Of course, you want someone with lots of training who is lifeguard/first aid/CPR certified, but you also want someone who connects with your child to encourage and motivate them.
You'll know you've found the perfect match when dinner conversation is dominated by what Miss Marina said at the last lesson, or when all of the pictures on the fridge prominently feature Coach Scuba. So, how do you find this super instructor? Here are a few things to consider.
Your child's personality. A loud, boisterous teacher can overwhelm a shy child; a mellow instructor will fail to engage an energetic kid.
The instructor's style. Does he follow a set routine or mix it up? Does she push hard for progress or take a more laid back attitude? Determine what works best for you and your child.
Your expectations. Some parents come into lessons with the goal that their child learns to swim as rapidly as possible. Others don't care how much time it takes as long as their child never sheds a tear. Be sure to talk to your instructor about your goals for the lesson.
If, after a few lessons, you find your child's instructor is not a good fit, ask to switch to a different instructor. Whatever you do - don't give up! Knowing how to swim not only offers years of fun activity but could literally save your child's life.

May is National Pet Month
Here's How to Celebrate

Pets should be celebrated every day. However, this month is a great reminder to spend some extra time with our pets. Humans and animals have a long history together. While it's not clear exactly when dogs were domesticated, it's estimated to have been between 16,000 and 30,000 years ago. Cats domesticated themselves about 5,000 years ago. That gives us thousands of years of pet love to commemorate this month!
Whether you're a parent of a pet or just have a strong love of animals, you can join in the celebration of National Pet Month.
Volunteer or donate animal supplies. You can donate items or financially to your local animal shelter. Some items to consider donating are food, treats, toys, leashes and collars, cat litter and bedding.
Teach them a new trick. Both dogs and cats can learn tricks. Consider teaching your dog how to roll over or your cat to sit. Look it up. It can be done! Teaching them tricks is a great way to increase your bond and satisfy their need for mental stimulation.
Adopt a shelter pet. What better way to celebrate National Pet Month than by giving a pet a home? Do the research to help you choose the type of pet that will fit best with you and your family's lifestyle. It's a forever commitment.
Make a vet appointment. Preventative care can help your pet live a happy, healthy and long life.
Exercise with your pet. In the US, over 50 percent of dogs and cats are overweight. Getting regular exercise with your pet improves their cardiovascular health as well as promotes good mental health.
Not sure which collar, leash, toy, food or treat is right for your pet? Stop by Pet Supplies Plus in Valencia and let their knowledgeable, animal-loving team steer you in the right direction.
