June is National Pet Preparedness Month
One of the smartest things you can do to protect your family and pets is to make sure you regularly review and update your disaster plan, supplies and information regularly. Pledge to be a responsible pet owner who will take your pets with you in case of an emergency.
Your Basic Disaster Kit should Include:
Food and water for at least five days and bowls for each pet.
Cat litter box, litter, a litter scoop and poop bags.
Sturdy leashes, harnesses and secure carriers.
Current photos of you with your pets in case you become separated.
Written information about your pets' feeding schedules, medical conditions and behavior issues along with the name and number of your veterinarian.
Medications and medical records stored in a waterproof container and a first-aid kit.
A favorite toy for comfort and a familiar blanket for warmth.
Being prepared can make a real difference for your family. Make sure to keep digital records and make a list of places that accept pets if an emergency happens. If your pets aren't microchipped already, get that done and keep the info current. Your pets' ID tags should be up to date with your information and emergency contacts. Your local Pet Supplies Plus has a wide selection of ID tags that you can engrave at the store for free.
If there is a disaster, don't allow your pets to roam loose. Landmarks may have changed and your pet could become disoriented. It's also smart to practice evacuating in the car with your animals, so they're more comfortable if you need to leave fast in an emergency. To learn more, log onto ready.gov/animals.

New Comedies & Workshops are Coming to the CTG this Summer
The Santa Clarita premier of the Broadway comedy "Something Rotten" plays through June 18 - and you won't want to miss it.
The year is 1595 and Shakespeare is a rockstar. A rival acting troupe, led by Nick and Nigel Bottom, are starving because they can't compete with "The Bard." They need something new, exciting and never done before.
Nick visits a soothsayer and asks what will be the newest, hottest thing in theater in the future. The soothsayer tells him that plays will have songs and dancing in them. Nick decides they will invent the musical to compete with William Shakespeare but surprise - things do not go as planned. The result? The funniest musical comedy ever written.
This summer, you can also celebrate with CTG as they reflect on over 20 years as the gold standard of summer youth workshops. The Canyon Theatre Guild is excited to announce three great shows that local youth will be producing this summer.
CTG Stars - ages 13 to 17 - bring you Disney's "Descendants: The Musical." This brand-new musical comedy features the beloved characters and hit songs from the films.
CTG Jrs, ages 10 to 13, premiers the exciting "Marvelous Universe: The Musical." Mediocre Man has trouble making his mark, but when heroes start mysteriously losing their powers, he might have just what they need to save the day!
CTG Kids, ages reading to 10, goes Dark Ages with "Medieval Madness & the Quest for Good Manners." An evil witch has cast a spell banishing good manners and now no one is getting along!

A "Need to Read" Drowning Prevention Checklist
Supervision
Never leave your child unsupervised in or near any body of water.
There is no substitute for supervision.
Don't allow barriers, such as fences or walls, to give you a false sense of security
Keep toys, tricycles and other children's play things away from the pool or spa
Don't consider your children to be "drown-proof" even if they are enrolled in swimming lessons.
Do not rely on "water wings" or inflatable devices to keep your child afloat
Barriers
Fencing, walls, latched doors, covers and alarms should always be utilized
Doors and windows leading to the pool area should be kept closed and locked
Fence gates should have self-closing, self-latching mechanisms
Teach your children to swim
Door, window and gate latches should be out of reach of children
Always drain standing surface water off of the pool or spa cover
Your pool or spa should always have well-maintained barriers or "layers of safety"
Emergency Procedures
Install a phone, or keep a cordless phone, in the pool or spa area
Know how to contact local emergency medical services
Post emergency phone numbers in an easy-to-see location
Child caregivers should always be familiar with emergency procedures
Learn and practice how to administer lifesaving techniques - CPR - to children
An easy reminder: Fence the pool, shut the gate - teach your kids to swim, it's great! Supervise - watch your mate - and learn how to resuscitate!

Summer is the Time for Unstructured Stillness
by Publisher Therese Edwards Tunney
Most days, our kids are beholden to routines - just like the rest of us. But during those long school-less summer days, we have an opportunity to let them just be - unrushed, unbothered. Resist the urge to "keep them busy." We don't need another generation of adults who feel uncomfortable being still. (Hi. That's me. Probably you, too.). What can that look like? Literally anything: a massive pile of books from the library; watching "one more" show; sleeping in; lounging in a makeshift tent with the cat; sitting in the garden.
What it doesn't look like: pressure to do something a certain way; rushing; feeling guilty because whatever is being done isn't productive or traditionally educational.
Kids who know how to rest, recharge and set some boundaries become adults who are healthier - mentally an physically.
Summer is the time to set aside some time to just... be. I hope you join in on the calm.
