Jacob Zamora, born in 1984, grew up in the SCV and attended Sulphur Springs, La Mesa and Canyon High schools. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America. After graduation, Jacob aspired to become a California Highway Patrol officer and became a member of the CHP Explorer Post 540 in the SCV.
At 19, he lost his life when the utility vehicle he was driving for work went off the road.
His family and friends still remember his smile. It was bright and playful, just like him. It lit up when he talked about surfing, his family, his future as a California Highway Patrol officer, his friends.
We didn't know him, but we know people who loved him - and we hope you'll join us in supporting their plan to ensure that his memory lives on.
The Jacob Zamora Memorial Shoot has become an annual event. During the past decade, the success of the shoot has supported Explorer Post 540 of the CHP. Recently, Jacob's family and friends, including Betsy James of the Oak Tree Gun Club, decided to create a nonprofit corporation in Jacob's name to not only support the Explorer Post but to also provide scholarships to students in the SCV.
On Saturday, November 23, you're invited to the 10th-annual Jacob Zamora Memorial Shoot at Oak Tree Gun Club. From 8am to 4pm, the community will honor the memory of Jacob while supporting CHP Explorer Post 540 and a scholarship fund for SCV students. Registration begins at 8am and is open to the public. The top shooter will win a Benelli Super Nova shotgun. Registrants will also receive a tee shirt and lunch. Non-shooters are welcome and their entrance is free! There will be food and tees available for purchase, a raffle and live entertainment provided by Miles 2 Go.
This year, the Jacob Zamora Memorial Foundation provided $3,000 in scholarships to three Canyon High students to further their education.
It's been a decade since the people who treasured Jacob lost him on November 22, 2003. He is gone, but his memory is vibrant, alive and inspiring everyone in the SCV and beyond to help young men and women see their dreams of education come true. Can we count on you to help?
