Q. Summer will not officially start until June 21, but here in Santa Clarita it is already heating up. What summer activities would you recommend for families looking to keep their kids active?
I always start with Seasons magazine. It has all of the information on city classes and programs for a wide range of interests and ages. One of the highlights for kids is the Summer Reading Program. It is a great way to get them excited about reading and help prevent the often talked about "Summer Slide" where kids forget what they learned in class. This year's theme is "A Universe of Stories." There is a whole slate of exciting and interactive activities, all centered on space exploration. Your kids will love creating magnetic slime or shaking up astronaut ice cream - all in the cool, air conditioned comfort of our Santa Clarita Public Library.
Speaking of a "Summer Slide," the best one in town is at our Santa Clarita Aquatic Center. My kids look forward to the summer months when the waterslide pool is open. Besides the two-story waterslide, they also enjoy the water play area where they can splash and get soaked with their friends. We also offer swim lessons for all ages and skills levels to make sure your kids are safe and confident in the water. For more information, visit santa-clarita.com/seasons.
Q. This time of year, our Hometown Hero banners are hanging from light poles throughout the city. How did this program get started and why do you think it is important in Santa Clarita?
Our community has such a deep, heartfelt appreciation for our veterans and actively-serving military. The Hometown Hero banner program was a passion project for our city council. In 2016, the City launched the banner program as a way to celebrate our residents who serve - and to show appreciation for how our community is made stronger by the sacrifices of our military heroes and their families. My favorite part of this program is the response it receives from the family members of our heroes. It gives these parents a sense of pride and closeness when their child is so far away. I also want our community to know our council has made it a priority that every hero be recognized. If you cannot afford a banner for your family member, there are sponsorships available. Q. A highlight of the summer is always Concerts in the Park. Although the shows don't start until next month, what acts are you looking forward to seeing this year? What can guests expect?
These summer concerts are a true Santa Clarita community experience. I love catching up with friends, neighbors and coworkers while enjoying a warm night at Central Park. The atmosphere is always light and relaxed. I like to set up some lawn chairs and hang out while my kids play catch on the field or play at the park while I enjoy the show. We have a unique, exciting line up this year that will guarantee a fun experience for all. The tribute bands this year will pay homage to everyone from the Spice Girls and Beach Boys to Prince and the Grateful Dead. For those of you who enjoyed the Oscar-award-winning film "Bohemian Rhapsody," there will also be a Queen tribute. For the full line up of shows, visit santa-clarita.com/concerts.
