Q: The highlight of the holiday season in Santa Clarita has to be the annual Light Up Main event. For people who have not been before, what should they expect?
Each year, Light Up Main has grown in popularity and in size! Last year we had an estimated 10,000 people on hand in Old Town Newhall to see our city council flip the switch and illuminate thousands of holiday lights. This premier holiday event will shut down Main Street for blocks of activities, food trucks, vendors and live performances on Saturday, November 16. Children of all ages will enjoy playing in the snow and getting a photo with Santa and Mrs. Claus. On the main stage right in front of the Old Town Newhall Library, there will be festive performances and holiday songs with host and Santa Clarita resident, Chris Schauble, anchor of the KTLA morning news. The performances kick off at 6pm with the tree lighting happening at 7:30pm.


Q: Although the stores have had their holiday decorations on display for months already, the shopping season is just picking up steam. I've heard a lot of buzz about shopping local. How does that benefit our community?
Our city sidewalks, streets, parks, recreation activities, medians, events, public safety, libraries and more benefit from residents spending their hard-earned dollars right here in Santa Clarita. Not to mention shopping close to home means less wear and tear on your vehicles, less time spent on the freeway and fewer greenhouse gas emissions. Plus, we have so many amazing shopping opportunities nearby! You are sure to find the perfect gift for that special someone on your shopping list in Old Town Newhall or at one of the local boutique shops located throughout the city.


Q: Residents are also planning holiday getaways right now. Santa Clarita Public Library says they have what you need for your next adventure - but with passport services now available at all three branches, they really do! What passport services are offered?
First off, make sure you schedule an appointment at one of the three branches in Old Town Newhall, Valencia or Canyon Country. Then you can get a new adult passport, renewal, new minor passport, replacement passport and passport photos. It is recommended to arrive at least 10 minutes early for your appointment. Please check out the website at santaclaritalibrary.com/passport-services to schedule an appointment and find a list of documents you will need to bring with you. While you're at the library, make sure to take the time to discover a new book or check the schedule for upcoming events.
