Kid's Review
Before Narnia, there was "The Magician's Nephew"
March, 2006 - Issue #17
I am sure many of you have seen the new movie "Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe." This entertaining movie tells about four siblings evacuated out of London because of war and forced to move to a large house in the country. There, they discover a magic wardrobe leading to another world called Narnia. They battle the white witch with the help of several mythical creatures including the majestic lion Aslan. During the film, you may have developed many questions such as: What is Narnia? Why is Aslan so powerful? Who is Queen Jadis (the white witch) and how did she get to Narnia? Why is the wardrobe magical? How did the lamppost get in Narnia? Why do the animals talk? The answers to these questions are found in Book 1 of the Chronicles of Narnia series - "The Magician's Nephew" by C.S. Lewis. After reading this book, the movie will make a lot more sense.

In Book 1, two children named Polly and Digory meet each other in their backyards in London. Digory's uncle (who calls himself a magician) tricks them into putting on a couple of rings that take them to a mystical wood filled with hundreds of small pools of water. They visit another world called Charn and upon their return to London, they accidentally bring back the evil Queen Jadis. Using the rings again, they go to Narnia, a magical new place just beginning to be formed by the mighty Aslan. Digory picks a magic apple, which cures his mother of a serious illness. He buries the apple core in his backyard and it becomes a tree. When the tree eventually dies, Digory uses the wood to make...well, you can figure it out.

"The Magician's Nephew" is an amazing story full of imagination and adventure. It is perfect for boys and girls of all ages who enjoy a good book. This particular story is the first in a seven book series. The other titles in order are: "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe," "The Horse and His Boy," "Prince Caspian," "The Voyage of The Dawn Treader," "The Silver Chair," and "The Last Battle." All of these can be found at your local bookstore. Enjoy your reading!
