"It's been windy." That's the excuse my best friend uttered to me in response to my complaint about recent run-ins with nose pickers. Windy, huh? And what type of weather should we blame for the panty-pickers around town? How about hot and humid? I'm so glad that I will be able to predict gross social faux pas based on Mr. WeatherMan's five-day forecast.
It is Saturday morning and just as you are sitting down to enjoy your morning coffee, you hear the most popular and annoying weekend sentence ever spoken: "What are we going to do today?"
Last August, I attended a baby shower for Jill Levy. Along with 20 other women, I watched her coo and smile over each gift. "Jack Junior is going to look so cute in this cowboy outfit!" I recall her exclaiming. Her adopted son was due within a month, and she was glowing.
We've read the headlines and seen the memorials: "Crash Kills Two Saugus Football Players." "Bouquet Canyon Head-On Kills Three Young People." "Teen Killed After Christmas Celebration."
Move Over, Mom - Scrapbooking is Fun for Kids, Too! and Making Memories with Mickey: A Magical Family Reunion in the Caribbean
Ladies and gentlemen, here's a surprise: I am disgusted. But first, what most of you will consider good news - my most recent experience in a local restaurant has me boycotting the whole lot of them. That's right, this may be my last article on restaurant behavior for a while. But I digress...
What a great time to get creative with the family! Whether you're making valentines or creating a new doormat for the house, spending quality time with the kids will bring you closer together.
"Student valet? What is that?" you might ask. Have you ever seen those shivering and yawning elementary school children standing on the sidewalk every single morning before school? They are the famous door openers and primary grade personal escorts. They stand outside local elementary schools every morning for YOU. They freeze themselves so YOU can quickly drop off your kids and then skedaddle to do whatever it is you do during those seven long hours of school. These amazing kids spend their social time helping their community. If you have not done so already, you should try the student valet service and see what a great treat it is.
Let me begin by admitting that I'd never be associated with the term "fashion-savvy" unless it was used in a sentence like, "Judith's not particularly fashion-savvy, poor thing." I don't own anything that appears in Vogue, and younger members of my family tease me for wearing stockings with my summer skirts. Actually, they tease me because I still use the word "stockings." I tell you these things as a preface of sorts so that you know that the most recent faux pas imbedded under my skin has nothing to do with fashion and everything to do with manners.
These adorable pinwheels can be decorated with paint, or, if you have scrap fabric available, you can cover the wood pieces with material. You can adapt these decorations by changing their colors, or make a special heirloom by covering the pieces with fabric that has sentimental value - small bits of an old baby blanket or a favorite shirt, perhaps. Painted pinwheels can be decorated with metallic pens and used for unique gift tags. Of course, adult supervision is always advised.
The Betty Ferguson Foundation's Youth with a Voice (YWAV) group is an organization for the benefit of pre-teen and teenage girls, plus some new elementary kids like me. We attend meetings once a month where we discuss school, friends, problems, and information about each other. We also perform community service whenever we have the chance. Sometimes, we have parties just for fun, with swimming, games, and food.
