Spring-semester Sporting Events

With each new year comes the anticipation of several exciting athletic activities involving SCV teams, as well as local high-school graduates.
Here are 17 significant sporting events to follow during the winter and spring schedules in 2017:
January 17
Valencia at Canyon girls basketball
Most seasons, this would be the first meeting involving the Foothill League powers, but Valencia's 46-45 victory December 10 in the Burroughs tournament final has only intensified the rivalry. The Vikings, the defending league champions, have won four straight over Canyon.
January 24
Valencia at Hart boys soccer:
Although the rivals split last year's matchups, Hart was forced to forfeit two additional victories after learning a player was competing on a team outside of high school competition during the season, resulting in Valencia's second league title in four years. Their first clash should be one of the
year's most emotional matches.
February 24 & February 25
Southern Section Masters wrestling tournament:
Valencia junior Chance Rich lost in the 113-pound final last year in Ontario, then made the state tournament in Bakersfield. Rich is moving up at least one weight class this season and possibly two, trying to become the first SCV athlete to win a Masters title and possibly medal at the March 4 state final.
March 3 & March 4
Southern Section basketball and soccer finals:
With divisional realignment in both sports, several SCV teams have more optimism when it comes to playoff prosperity. Santa Clarita Christian girls basketball has Division 6 championship aspirations, along with Hart boys soccer in Division 4 and Valencia in Division 3.
March 23
Golden Valley at West Ranch track & field:
After winning three girls league titles in four years, Coach Sarah Soltani left Golden Valley and was hired at West Ranch. This meet will be the first showdown for Soltani against her former school.
April 6 to April 8
Arcadia Invitational:
The 50th edition of one of the nation's most prestigious track & field meets will feature several SCV athletes in individual events and relays, in addition to West Ranch heptathlete Adaugo Oguejiofor likely competing in the multis.
April 13 to April 15
Mt. San Antonio College Relays:
With construction at Mt. SAC's Hilmer Lodge Stadium, the 59th installment of one of the country's historic track & field meets will be held at El Camino College and include current SCV athletes, as well as former stars competing collegiately.
April 26
Hart vs. Valencia swimming:
The annual dual meet involving the elite Foothill programs at Santa Clarita Aquatic Center will conclude the regular season, forcing the rivals to square off three times in a nine-day span, including the league prelims and finals.
May 2
West Ranch at Valencia softball:
Although their first showdown is April 13, this game marks the return of new West Ranch Coach Jay Creps to Valencia. Creps' 18-year coaching career began as a Vikings' junior varsity assistant, in addition to his daughter Jaisa, a 2003 graduate, playing catcher for Valencia.
May 4
Foothill League swimming and track & field finals:
One of the most exciting days on the spring schedule will showcase several elite swimmers at Santa Clarita Aquatic Center, followed by individual and relay titles being decided on the oval at College of the Canyons.
May 8
Southern Section Northern Individual Regional boys golf:
After no Foothill golfers advanced past the first round of postseason competition last year, they will look to rebound and reach the May 18 section final at Mission Lakes Country Club.
May 13
Southern Section swimming Division 1 finals:
Section champions Tanner Olson of Saugus, along with Kaila Wong and Nikol Popov of Valencia, will look to win more individual titles at Riverside Aquatic Complex.
May 20
Southern Section boys volleyball finals:
With West Ranch reaching the Division 2 semifinals last year and Valencia advancing to the quarterfinals, expect both teams to again be in contention to reach championships with offseason realignment of postseason divisions.
May 26
Southern Section Masters track & field meet:
Canyon pole vaulter Jeremiah Chow was the league's only field event athlete to advance past this level last year. Golden Valley thrower Shyann Franklin has the potential to reach the state meet this season.
June 1 to June 7
Women's College World Series:
The eight-team NCAA softball championship in Oklahoma annually showcases many elite SCV graduates and this season should be no exception.
June 2 & June 3
Southern Section baseball and softball finals:
West Ranch made the Division 1 baseball semifinals and Hart advanced to the quarterfinals last year, with Valencia reaching the Division 1 softball elite eight. All three teams have legitimate goals to contend for championships this season with the new realigned playoff divisions.
June 17 to June 27
College World Series:
Arizona reached last year's baseball championship series in Nebraska, losing to Coastal Carolina. The Wildcats return former West Ranch standout JC Cloney, plus Valencia graduates Jared Oliva and Luke Soroko.
