Last year, West Ranch surprised everyone with a 19-9 record, going 6-4 in the Foothill in the process and taking fourth overall. Guard David Franklin was a big reason. The 6-foot senior is one of the Wildcats' most consistent scorers. Leave him along on the perimeter and he'll drop the three-pointer. Guard him too close and he'll glide past you on the way to the rim. Double team him and he'll deliver the ball to the open teammate. With the return of this All-Foothill League second teamer, West Ranch will challenge the valley again this winter.

Ryan Zirbel, senior

Last year, Ryan Zirbel ran away from the Foothill League in 2007. He ran around it. He ran over it. The numbers don't lie. Zirbel amassed 278 carries and a Saugus school-record 2,281 yards last year. He tallied 38 touchdowns (36 rushing) and generally kept opposing coaches up late on Thursday nights. Against Golden Valley, the Centurion set an SCV record with 387 rushing yards. Why is the rest of the league concerned? Because that was only his junior season.

Jordan Danny, senior

Jordan Danny, the reigning All-SCV Girls Swimmer of the Year is set to dominate the talent-rich Foothill League again in 2008. Danny capped her junior year with a CIF-Southern Section Division II gold medal (and record) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1 minute, 1.196 seconds). She also swam on Hart's winning 200-yard medley relay team (1:47.81). Danny's personal bests in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:10.64) and the 200-meter individual medley (2:21.05) rank her among the world's top 100. This summer, she earned an invitation to the 2008 U.S. Olympic trials.

Jason Ferlianto, sophomore

You could argue that Canyon High's Jason Ferlianto arrived a year ahead of schedule last year. Only a freshman, the 5-foot-6 Ferlianto held down the Cowboys' number-one slot in tennis all season. In May, he added the exclamation point - knocking off West Ranch's favored Jordan Hovis to claim the Foothill League singles title. Known as much for his tenacity as he is for his consistent stroke, Ferlianto will need both in 2008-09. He wears the league crown. That means he also wears a target.

Starla Wright, senior

Valencia forward Starla Wright is going to command double teams wherever Valencia plays in 2008-09. She is going to gobble rebounds. She is going to foul opposing players out. She may be enough to make the Vikings a league favorite. The 5-foot-10 Wright averaged 11.5 points and a team-high 7.1 rebounds as a junior - and most of that came as a result of her hustle. Now a senior, she's going to be the offensive focus. That's bad news for the rest of the league.
