Most girls wanted to be Ginger. The rest wanted to be Mary Ann. The boys? It was a toss up between The Professor and Skipper. But what drew us to "Gilligan's Island" weren't the characters, the silliness or the possibility

of making a radio out of a coconut. Even as youths, we were drawn to the lifestyle. We wanted to sleep in hammocks and live under thatched roofs. We yearned for our own private waterfall, a nice palm tree to climb, and maybe a monkey, too - they seemed so friendly. We would have traded our suburban driveway for a sandy beach landing any day.

Not much has changed. We're bigger now, but many of us still want to be out of the concrete jungle and into a real one, at least for a little while.

Tiffany and Mike Smith have managed to pull it off. Together, with their four children (Amanda, 18; Tess, 12; Peyton, 11; Luke, 8), the family has created their own version of a castaway island, complete with luxuries Gilligan could only have dreamed of.

The 10,000-square-foot lot is filled to the brim with tropical fun. Of course, the main event is the lagoon-inspired pool that features a grotto, beach entry and water slide. When guests and family are done with their dip they can freshen up in the well-appointed outdoor bathroom.

A comfortable hammock, tied traditionally to two mature palms, beckons the weary while an outdoor game room chock-full with a full-size pool table, video games, music system and television calls to the more energetic.

Either way, it's a win-win. "There really is something for everyone," says Tiffany Smith. "There's always something to do."

Which explains why the Smith home is a get-together favorite. "We have a lot of 'cheer' parties," says Smith, whose daughter participated in the activity. "There's an in-ground trampoline, surrounded by padding, that gets a lot of use." The multiple gas pits (perfect for roasting marshmallows), fireplace, outdoor lounge and grass-thatched dining space also make the space popular.

A project of this magnitude did not evolve over night. In fact, the "work in progress" started in 1999 and took six years to see its completion - and it was all based on one man's vision. "This is my husband's baby," says Smith. "He designed the whole thing. He explained his plans to the contractors, but the result is totally him. He's been talking about a yard like this since the day I met him," she shares.
