Inside SCV Magazine Room Makeover Preview
Local Saugus Family Wins Contest
September, 2006 - Issue #23
The Salcedo
The Salcedo's family room, plain and lacking the elements that make a house a home, will soon be made over by the Inside SCV Magazine Room Makeover team.
What a struggle! After reviewing over 180 amazing entries, each with a unique story and heart-felt requests to makeover bathrooms, bedrooms, kitchens and even closets, we've selected a local Saugus family in desperate need of a new family room as the winners of our annual Room Makeover contest (You may accuse us of taking the easy way out, but we weren't really sure how we'd incorporate plantation shutters and television lifts into a closet!).

Meet the Salcedo family: Al, Chris, Julianna,10, Nickole, 5, and the twins - Gabriella and Danielle, 3. Al, a medical sonographer, and Chris, an x-ray technician, work non-traditional hours to provide a good home for their four children.

After moving into what Chris refers to as their "dream home" in the Estrella Vista tract three years ago, the couple began the task of decorating. While nearly every homeowner comes in contact with the regular home improvement roadblocks like lack of time and resources, the Salcedo family also had to consider a common but less-talked-about home improvement staller: childhood tendencies to destroy anything that isn't nailed down or made of plastic.

"When we moved in, the kids were just babies. We decided not to do anything until the kids were past the destructive stage. The last room of the house was put on the back burner, and now we have no idea what to do with it," Chris Salcedo
"When we moved in, the kids were just babies. We decided not to do anything until the kids were past the destructive stage. The last room of the house was put on the back burner, and now we have no idea what to do with it," says Chris.

That's where the Inside SCV Magazine makeover team comes in. We immediately saw great potential in the room, which, while large and attached to the kitchen/eating area, only contains the base elements of a family room: flooring, a couch, loveseat and sliding chair.

"The rest of our house is simple, contemporary and uncluttered," says Chris. "We are hoping for a really nice, comfortable family room that all of us can enjoy. I imagine that 80 percent of our living goes on in there. I don't want to be afraid of putting our feet on the coffee table and relaxing, but I want it to be elegant, too. I can't wait to have a look that's pulled together, and I'm thrilled that soon, the television won't just sit there like an eyesore."

Now that we have a makeover winner, our team of professionals will begin the process of revamping the Sacedo's family room. While we can't yet disclose the details, rest assured that this will be our best room makeover yet! Check out the results in the October issue of Inside SCV Magazine.
