The grand stairway and living room space makes a big first impression, thanks to contrast that finds balance between the structured and the organic. Every other stair tread is an eye-popping black-and-white tile alternated with a white-wood stair riser - and the light-wood stair tread accents the detail ever so perfectly.

When my company, Rebecca Rollins Interiors, was approached to create a home with a fun, electric-modern vibe, I jumped at the opportunity.


What once was an unused outdoor courtyard has been transformed into the heart of the home. The kids love hanging out and playing pool with family and friends.

The homeowners were inspired by natural materials like wood, linen and stone - but they needed a space that would be kid friendly, too... three young, active boys live here!


The family room's low-profile custom sofa finished in a dark fabric anchors the room and keeps the sightline drawn to the outside view.

The balance was found by using a unique mix of textures and materials to create an elemental space that's also comfortable and approachable.


Custom floating shelves with a custom hood add character and detail. Modern white subway tiles with a darker grout provide delicious contrast to the culinary space while dark wood beams draw the eye up.

Not one detail was overlooked - and mixing and matching was the name of the game, resulting in a space that is imperfect, but elevated.


The kitchen nook is organic, yet tailored - a perfect cozy corner for quiet morning moments. Relaxed linens and seagrass provide a sharp contrast to the custom table with light wood and a black base.

Take, for example, the raw-wood riddling racks with succulents poised on a vertical black shiplap wall or the patterned tile paired with a raw-wood mantel around the fireplace. The earthy tones and organic textures, mixed with metals, leathers and pops of color, make a space that's minimalistic magic.


The office flows seamlessly with the rest of the home, thanks to raw-wood tones, white tile and a custom-made desk in a greige finish. Black French doors give the illusion of privacy but still make the space feel open.

Here's a tip for achieving a similar feel in an often-too-crowded space: shelving. Mix vintage pieces with newer items, incorporating layered pictures and book stacks so that there's a variety of heights and textures. This technique will give your shelving life while maintaining a look of balance.
