The story of Jim and Debbie Phillips' Valencia home actually begins in Central California, where the couple resided for decades.
"We're not from here - when we moved to Santa Clarita, we only knew one person! We had no idea where we were going to land, but Jim fell in love with this view. We walked up there and he was just blown away," says Debbie.
The couple purchased the home in the fall of 2019. Not long after, they began a remodel with interior designer Stephanie Laney.
"I had seen her work in Inside SCV Magazine and I knew I had to meet her!" says the homeowner. "I fell in love with a home she did that was on the cover a year and a half ago."
It was Laney's Modern Madrid looks that drew the Phillips to her work.
The home's primary "entertainment zone," the outdoor kitchen area - complete with pizza oven - is a chef-approved oasis. "It's a complete gourmet space. You can roast a chicken, make a pizza, whip up cocktails - it's as functional as it is beautiful," says Laney.
"One of our goals was to create a hotel-like environment, with spaces in and around the home where people could gather at different times of day and for different occasions," says Laney. "This space is the center of the home and visible from all avenues of the house. It draws the eye with organic wall art and a custom pattern that was crafted as a backdrop for the water feature. We liked the juxtaposition of fire and water, all grounded in a blend of Utah Sunrise and Oklahoma flagstone."
"We were really excited to have our first home that would feel European, particularly Spanish," says Debbie. "Our other home was very mountainesque - pine trees, beams, vaulted ceilings. We were really looking forward to having something bright, with casual features that are elegant where they need to be."
