"On the days when it feels like things are going ok, settle into those moments. Absorb them. Name them. Experience them to the BEST OF YOUR ABILITY."
How to be Grateful Even When You don't Quite Feel Like It
For over 30 years, I've been known as the Realtor with an "attitude of gratitude." It's never been hard for me to conjure up reasons to give thanks - especially this time of year.
Until now. 2020 has been... tough.
I had to sit myself down for a little chat before I wrote this, which made me think that sometimes it's better to remind people how to be grateful than why they "should" be grateful.
I'm not a therapist or a mindset coach - but in my work as a Realtor, I've partnered with enough people to recognize patterns and draw lessons from them. I hope this helps those of you who might be feeling stuck.
Being grateful takes practice.
When you're feeling kicked in the gut, a saccharine-sweet reminder to "count your blessings" can feel really hollow. I realize that I've made my focus on gratitude a sort of preventative medicine in my life. If you think of being intentionally grateful every day as the equivalent of a vitamin you pop each morning that helps you stay healthy, you're on the right track. It's the same thing! On the days when it feels like things are going ok, settle into those moments. Absorb them. Name them. Experience them to the best of your ability. If this year's proved anything to us, it's that the next day might be a bit of a dud - or worse. Doubling down on gratitude when it comes easy makes it less difficult to find reasons to feel thanks on days that are hard.
Being grateful requires attention and presence.
Close your eyes right now and quickly picture all the things, situations and people that you're grateful for. I'll wait!
Was it easy? Did your brain quickly overflow with images, sounds and thoughts of gratitude?
If it didn't, that's ok. Most of us are stressed right now - and that makes it harder to take time to do much more than the necessities.
Here's the trick: Stop focusing on how things are "supposed" to be and just acknowledge how things "are." You might be pleasantly surprised by how many things are actually unabashedly good when you sit in the moment and focus on what's right in front of you.
Being grateful means you have to put in the work, too.
Here's the tough love, friends. If you're struggling to find reasons to be grateful, it might be because you're not putting in the work to make moments that are remarkably worthy of gratitude. It's hard to feel grateful for our health when we're on Day 8 of stomach-churning fast-food dinners. It's tough to feel grateful for our relationships when we pick unnecessary fights with our equally-stressed-out partner. It might feel impossible to feel grateful for our jobs that provide our standard of living if all we do is complain about our boss every chance we get. Yes, we "should" be grateful that we woke up today, that we have food to eat, etc. - but most of us desire a more rich, fulfilling feast of gratitudes. Absolutely be grateful for every. single. thing. You are blessed! But put in the work where you need to - and then you can add "your proactive mindset" to the list of things to be thankful for!
Truth be told - I've never been more grateful for you, my friends and neighbors. I'm also grateful that Santa Clarita is experiencing a market like no other - and that sales prices continue to climb for well-positioned homes. I'd love to tell you how much your home is worth right now - and how you can best capitalize on that very attractive number. It'll be one more thing for you to be grateful for in 2020!
